Gated Heart Pool Scan

What is the scan for?

The scan can tell you how well your heart is contracting overall and can also see which parts are not working well enough.

What preparation is required?

No preparation is required.

What about the injection?

To attach the radio-tracer to the red cells in your blood, you need 2 injections.  The first injection attaches to red cells and the second injection (of radio-tracer) attaches to the first.  There are no side effects and you will not feel tired or dizzy and you can drive a car.

What about the pictures?

Immediately after the second injection, a series of pictures are obtained.  The camera takes 4 pictures of your heart at different angles.  It is necessary for an ECG to be performed during the pictures so it can be synchronised with the beating of your heart.  The picture takes about 40 to 60 minutes depending on how well your heart is beating.

When do I get the results?

Results will be available the following day after 2pm.
